In its classical spiritual and moral dimension, this commandment addresses the roots of human desire for possession—not merely as a physical act but as an internal intention, which can lead to the violation of other ethical principles. In the contemporary world, where society operates within a system of perpetual exposure, consumption, and comparison (primarily mediated through social media and visual culture), this prohibition assumes the role of a critical commentary on desire as a destabilizing force affecting identity, relationships, and individual psychological well-being.
Within the framework of Conscious Abstraction, the image does not directly reference the “house” or “wife” as figurative elements; rather, it treats them as symbols of structures of desire—spaces recognized as foreign yet onto which we project our unfulfilled needs. Abstraction becomes a tool to explore these boundaries: when the need for growth transforms into the lust for possession, and admiration into envy.
From a contemporary perspective, the work raises the question: Is desire untainted by comparison possible? Furthermore, does desire that does not culminate in action remain morally neutral? The piece suggests that, in a world saturated with images yet deprived of genuine presence, desire itself is profoundly complicated and ethically charged.
