“Do not be indifferent,” appealed Marian Turski. The former Auschwitz prisoner took part in the ceremonies marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp.

The photographic work executed through the light-painting technique serves as a visual interpretation of a proposed moral imperative of contemporary society: the prohibition of indifference toward suffering, violence, injustice, and the disintegration of community. Although the phrase “Do not be indifferent” does not originate from traditional religious sources, it has acquired the status of an ethical commandment of universal significance in the present day. This imperative does not regulate specific actions but rather an attitude—presence, vigilance, and responsibility.

Artistically, the image employs light as a sign of consciousness and darkness as a metaphor for repression, ignorance, or passivity. The composition includes areas of shadow into which light enters subtly, at times dramatically—as if without seeking permission. This visual form simulates the moment of conscience awakening, a point at which neutrality ceases to be an option.

Within the framework of Conscious Abstraction, the abstract forms of light evoke echoes of gestures and traces of presence—symbolizing moments when the individual transcends the barrier of silence and enters the space of responsibility. The focus is not on spectacular action but on the fundamental act of recognizing the other person.
