The artist’s concept: before the beginning
Bereshit, the first word of the Torah, opens Genesis and frames the Jewish understanding of the beginning of existence. The work concerns what precedes the first word of God: tohu wa-bohu, void and formlessness, over which silence holds. Time does not yet exist, and space has no form. The beginning comes only with “Let there be light”. It asks what precedes the beginning.
